Map 1

Fully aware that wonder is the arch enemy of prudence, one morning, on the 11 th March 2018, we left Verona, for a while. Since then we have travelled, on every means of transport, 7,883km between Mexico and the United States, both clinging onto each other. The first two weeks in Mexico City, (which revealed itself as the perfect place to start) allowed me to silently observe and acquire all the confidence necessary for a trip further north of the country.

We travelled along the northern spine of Mexico by camiòn (lorry), until we made it almost to its nape, visiting various cities painted with colour and history, including Real de Catorce (⇒) where we let go of our (perhaps European?) obsession with time.

In Chihuahua we changed direction and headed left and aboard El Chepe (⇒) , an old train which travels through the Sierra Tarahumara canyon, we made it, after about 700km, to the Gulf of California. It was in those lands that we learnt about the spirituality of the Raramuri, the quick footed indigenous people.

In Los Mochis, we boarded a ferry, along with a horde of hairy lorry drivers to La Paz where we spent a few days under water, snorkeling amongst whales, manta rays and sea lions. (⇒) Then we crossed the Baja California Sur (⇒) cactus desert by car. We slept in the pretty small towns dotted around, until we got to Loreto.

Every time we woke up in the morning, we talked, with a sense of great freedom that was almost euphoric, about what we would do that day.

From here, a plane delivered us with heavy hearts to our friends Miles and Leanne in Los Angeles, who welcomed us with open arms and from whom we have learnt a lot. After a week, we hired a car to get to (campsite after campsite) the legendary Highway One- our backs were covered by the old, vertical and robust nature. Every night, we lit a fire and we talked a lot. Once we got to San Francisco, a beautiful and rebellious city, the Sunday morning gospel service at the Glide Memorial Methodist Church filled us with a faith we did not know about. (⇒).

A short flight of just a few hours delivered us back to Mexico where we will make our home in Oaxaca for the next few weeks, thanks to the blue-yellow- red-green houses that we love. And then, it is off again, towards the south, who knows where.
